Call for Walls (Mural Projects 2024)

Interested in having a mural painted on your building?  

The Greater Hartford Arts Council is seeking walls in the City of Hartford for murals in 2024.

If your wall meets the following criteria, complete the Wall Application below 

Eligibility Criteria:  

  • Wall must be located in the City of Hartford.

  • The wall is high profile/high visibility.

  • The wall has limited obstructions (windows, doors, pipes, etc.)

  • The applicant must be the building owner or have their permission to have the wall painted.

  • You must be able to provide the dimensions and information about the wall during the application process

  • A point person from your organization, business, or group must be involved in the project. 

  • The artist will need to have access to the wall for painting, this may require scaffolding or lifts for walls the exceed the height of a ladder.

If the Arts Council is interested in your wall:  

  • You will be contacted by a member of our staff to set up a site visit to determine if the wall is a good fit for this project.

  • You will be involved in the review of art proposals for your wall. Arts Council staff will recommend an artist for your wall based on the best match for artist experience and style.

  • Murals will be painted between April and August of 2024

  • Funding for mural projects is made possible by Hartford Creates, a partnership program between the Greater Hartford Arts Council and the City of Hartford. For larger projects, the building owner or wall applicant may be required to contribute funding to the project. 

  • Themes of the Hartford Creates mural projects include: Joy, Hope, Inspiration, Wonder, and Representation of the Hartford Community. Muralists will create a proposal based on these themes. Proposals will first be approved by the Arts Council, then business owners will have an opportunity to review and share feedback.

  • Site safety assessments will be conducted 45 days before the artist beginnings their mural. Safety assessments will be conducted by Associated Construction.

  • The Arts Council’s contracted wall prep team will assist with power washing and priming walls

  • The Arts Council will be responsible for ordering lifts and scaffolding, when necessary. A conversation about lift and scaffolding needs will be conducted during the safety assessment. 

  • The Greater Hartford Arts Council holds general liability insurance. Mural artists will also be required to have their own general liability insurance. 

  • A contract will be signed between the Greater Hartford Arts Council and the property owner.
