Creative Workshops

Story Essentials with Michael Burns

Creative Writing Series

The Art Room: 100 Pearl St. Fl 1

Join Michael Burns for a series of creative writing workshops that are designed for writers of all levels. If you’re a veteran of writing, you’ll learn new tips to make your work stand out from the crowd. If you’re brand new to writing, you’ve found the best place to start: with the fundamental building blocks that will transform and professionalize your writing. Michael has taught hundreds of writing workshops all around the world and has come back to his original home to share his insights and strategies with you.

Story creation, story design, and storytelling are broad ideas. But sometimes we accept these ideas without understanding what they actually mean. What’s the difference between a story and anything else that’s written down? Why are these differences important? And why can not understanding these differences block your writing from evolving?

If you love stories and want to (or are in the process of) creating your own, then Story Essentials is a required start. Take one workshop or join us for all three! All workshops are held in the Arts Council's Art Room at 100 Pearl Street in Hartford.

About Michael

Michael Burns is a published author (Penguin), film maker, union organizer, and master storyteller. He's also the founder of India's largest live, true storytelling event series and the most popular creative writing workshop in the country. His understanding of the power of stories stems from his work as a documentary film maker over the last twenty years and as a writing coach over the last five. Moving to Asia in 2011, he found a new passion, live story performance. In organizing these performances, Michael has coached hundreds of storytellers and edited thousands of stories. It's his mantra, to enjoy the journey not just the destination, that separates Michael's teaching, workshops, and talks from other coaches and workshop leaders. He has a BA from Georgetown University, an MS from UMass, Amherst, and a Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham in the UK and teaches university classes in the US and writing workshops all over the world. For more on his work see writewithmichael.com, thestoryretreat.com, and michaelpburns.com. Michael has taught hundreds of writing workshops all around the world and has come back to his original home to share his insights and strategies with you.
