I Am An Artist Day

Wednesday, September 13 | Old State House | 11:30AM - 1:30PM

Discover your inner artist through creative and interactive experiences with local arts organizations and artists! Here are just a few examples of the exciting activities of the day:

The Amistad Center for Art & Culture's Words Matter
Words can change the world. Decorate a cut out person and add a word bubble to leave a question, comment or suggestion about how we can build bridges in our community.

Ballet Theatre Company: 5,6,7,8!
Learn the 5 critical positions of ballet technique. Tutus and tiaras will be on hand for photos.

Charter Oak Cultural Center: African Drumming with Jocelyn Pleasant
Passersby can try the drums and engage in “call and response” activities in a drum circle format.

Connecticut Landmarks: Stained Glass
Create your own "stained glass" using photo paper and transparencies to celebrate the restoration of the stained glass windows of the Isham-Terry House, which were reinstalled this April.

Harriet Beecher Stowe Center: Words that Changed the World
Words that Changed the World is an activity where visitors draw or paint the cover or an image of a book that changed their way of thinking and pin it to a collective board so others can be inspired to read these books.
Hartford Stage: Which 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' Character are You?

Ever at a loss for words? Spin the wheel to find out which character from A Midsummer Night's Dream you are! Hartford Stage teaching artists will assist you with creating a tableau (a frozen image that tells a story) as your newfound character. Snap a picture in your character tableau for a chance to be featured on our Instagram! Character personality sheets will be on hand.

Hartford Symphony Orchestra: Instrument Petting Zoo
Stop by the Symphony's Instrument Petting Zoo to try out a variety of instruments and experience the joy of live music!
Hill-Stead Museum: Found Poetry
Words from the poem Cap d'Antibes will be used like magnet poetry to create new poems. A painting of Claude Monte's painting by the same name will be displayed. Poetry books from the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival will be on hand for passersby to flip through.

Judy Dworin Performance Project: Making Me Whole - Labyrinths
Quiet the mind from everyday distractions to find inner peace. Write down your worries then throw them into the "worry bag," followed by a brief meditation exercise.

Mark Twain House & Museum: Twain Trivia
Mark Twain trivia quizzes and fill-in the blank writing excerpts to test your Twain knowledge. A life-size Mark Twain cutout will also be on display for visitor selfies.

New Britain Museum of American Art: California Dreaming Buttons
Create your own button. Use premade images from the NBMAA's collection, color your own, or try your hand at spin-art.

Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society: The Art of Linguistics
Take part in an epic Scrabble challenge! Play giant Scrabble and compete to create the most exceptional word of the day.

Real Art Ways: Hand-Bound Books
Create a hand-bound blank book that can be used as a notepad, sketchbook or anything else you can imagine.

Wadsworth Atheneum: Wadsworth Welcomes Mono Prints
Create your own Wadsworth Welcome Mono print inspired by an artist from the Wadsworth Atheneum's collection. Unique tools, colorful inks, and materials you may not use everyday will be used to create the print.
