>> Fellowships Available for Writers

Applications are available online for a new fellowship program for low-income writers from Greater Hartford to attend a retreat center in Litchfield.

The new Wisdom House Writers Fellowship Program was developed to encourage the work of writers in the 29-town region.  Fellowships are available to stay at the Wisdom House Retreat and Conference Center in Litchfield. The fellowships, which cover accommodations and meals, are funded by a grant from the Beatrice Fox Auerbach Foundation Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

“The fellowships will provide local writers with an opportunity to focus on and develop their writing by providing a quiet environment,” said Sister Jo-Ann Iannotti, who is coordinating the program. “Writers may request to stay at the facility for two to 10 days to focus on and develop their writing.”

Applications are available online at www.wisdomhouse.org and are being accepted immediately for summer dates.  Applicants must be at least 21 years old. Writers do not have to have been published to apply.  Besides seeking financial information, the application requests a writing sample and references with knowledge of the applicant’s interest in writing. Applications are also available by calling 860-567-3163.

Wisdom House is an interfaith retreat and conference center, presenting programs in spirituality, education and the arts. The center specializes in hospitality to the nonprofit community and is a sponsored service of the Daughters of Wisdom, a Roman Catholic religious order.  The center includes several buildings - the oldest dates to 1770 - and 70 acres of meadows, woods and brooks. Wisdom House is on the corner of Clark and East Litchfield Roads about 2.5 miles from Litchfield Center.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is the community foundation for the 29-town Greater Hartford region, dedicated to improving the quality of life for area residents for the past 85 years.  The Foundation receives gifts from thousands of generous individuals and families, and last year, awarded grants of more than $25 million to a broad range of area nonprofit organizations.  For more information about the Hartford Foundation, visit www.hfpg.org or call 860-548-1888.
